Udyam (MSME) registration is free, fully online and based on Aadhaar, yet many small businesses still skip it. It gives your business official MSME status and unlocks benefits that directly improve cash flow and access to credit.
Who qualifies as an MSME?
Classification depends on both investment in plant and machinery (or equipment) and annual turnover. Under the revised limits:
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Manufacturers, service providers and traders can all register.
Key benefits of Udyam registration
- Protection against delayed payments: under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay micro and small enterprises within the agreed period, which cannot exceed 45 days. Late payments carry compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and you can file a case with the MSME Samadhaan facilitation council.
- Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act: buyers can claim a deduction for amounts owed to micro and small enterprises only when they actually pay within the time allowed. This gives your customers a strong reason to pay you on time.
- Collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE credit guarantee scheme, and priority-sector lending from banks.
- Government tenders: exemption from EMD (earnest money deposit) and preference in public procurement, including on the GeM portal.
- Subsidies and concessions on trademark and patent fees, ISO certification costs and various state schemes.
Documents required
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or director
- PAN of the business (and GSTIN, if registered)
- Bank account details
- Basic details: business activity (NIC code), number of employees, investment and turnover
How to register
Registration is done on the official Udyam Registration portal (udyamregistration.gov.in). Aadhaar is verified by OTP, PAN and GST data are fetched automatically, and the Udyam certificate is issued online. The government charges no fee. Be wary of look-alike websites that charge for the “certificate”.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the wrong NIC activity code, which can limit the benefits you can claim
- Not updating the Udyam details when your turnover or investment changes
- Registering the same business more than once
